Things 3 is one of the most beautiful task apps ever built. It is also Apple-only, has no web app, costs $80 across iPhone+iPad+Mac, and offers no API. Toodledo runs everywhere, costs $4–6/month, and has a public API.
Where Things 3 Wins
Design. The interface is genuinely the best in the category. Animations, typography, gesture work — all considered.
Today/Evening/Anytime/Someday. The default views are an opinionated GTD-adjacent system that works well out of the box.
One-time purchase. No subscription. Pay once, use forever (per platform).
Where Toodledo Wins
Web app. Things has none. If you ever use a Windows or Linux machine, or borrow a friend’s computer, Things is unavailable.
Android. Things does not exist on Android.
API access. Toodledo has one. Things has none.
Saved searches as smart lists. Toodledo lets you build any filter and pin it. Things has fixed views.
Custom fields. Toodledo has them. Things has tags only.
Bottom Line
Apple-only and aesthetics-driven? Things 3 is unmatched. Cross-platform and power-user oriented? Toodledo. The platform-lock question is real — if you ever switch ecosystems, your Things data does not come with you cleanly.
