You can't focus alone in your home office. But somehow, when you sit in a coffee shop — surrounded by strangers who have no idea what you're working on — you knock out three hours of focused work. Or you can't start your taxes alone, but when your partner sits across the table doing their own thing, you sail through them.

This isn't random. It's called body doubling, and for many people with ADHD, it's one of the most effective focus tools available.

## What Body Doubling Is

Body doubling means working in the physical or virtual presence of another person. The other person doesn't need to be doing the same work. They don't need to be helping, coaching, or supervising. They just need to be there.

The term comes from the ADHD community, where the phenomenon is widely recognized even though formal research is still catching up. ADHD coaches have used body doubling for decades, and it's increasingly popular as remote work has made solo work the default.

## Why It Works

The exact mechanism isn't fully understood, but several factors likely contribute:

**External accountability.** Even passive accountability — someone who might notice if you switch to social media — helps regulate behavior. You're not accountable to the person; their presence creates ambient accountability.

**Social regulation.** ADHD involves difficulties with self-regulation, including regulating attention. The presence of another person provides a form of external regulation — their calm, focused energy creates a social environment that supports focus.

**Reduced isolation anxiety.** Working alone can trigger a low-level anxiety for some people, especially those with ADHD. The loneliness of solo work becomes one more thing competing for attention. Another person's presence removes that source of distraction.

**Environmental anchoring.** When you're alone, the impulse to get up, check the fridge, or lie on the couch has zero friction. Another person's presence adds just enough social friction to keep you seated and working.

## In-Person Body Doubling

The most common forms of in-person body doubling:

**Coffee shop work.** The classic body double environment. You're surrounded by people, there's ambient noise, and there's a social norm of "people here are working." The key is choosing a spot where you won't be interrupted by conversations.

**Library sessions.** Even quieter than a coffee shop, with an even stronger social norm of focused work. Libraries provide built-in body doubling for free.

**Co-working spaces.** Designed for exactly this purpose. You're surrounded by other people focused on their work, creating a powerful ambient accountability.

**Working alongside a friend or partner.** "Let's both work at the kitchen table for the next two hours" is body doubling, even if you're working on completely different things.

## Virtual Body Doubling

Remote work has spawned virtual body doubling platforms where you join a video call with other people who are also working. You can see each other on camera, but you're each doing your own work. It sounds odd until you try it — the effect is remarkably similar to in-person body doubling.

Options include dedicated platforms like Focusmate, which matches you with a partner for 25, 50, or 75-minute work sessions. There are also Discord servers, Zoom rooms, and community groups built around virtual co-working.

The structure of virtual body doubling sessions typically includes: a brief check-in (what are you working on?), a focused work period with cameras on, and a brief check-out (what did you accomplish?). The bookends add intention and accountability.

## Combining Body Doubling with Task Management

Body doubling works best when you know what to work on before the session starts. This is where [Toodledo](https://www.toodledo.com) comes in:

**Before the session:** Open Toodledo and pick 1-3 tasks for the session. Be specific. "Work on the project" is too vague. "Write sections 2 and 3 of the client proposal" gives you a clear target.

**During the session:** Work through your chosen tasks. If your mind wanders to other tasks, jot them in Toodledo's quick-add and return to your current focus. The body double provides the accountability; Toodledo provides the direction.

**After the session:** Mark completed tasks in Toodledo. Note progress on tasks that aren't finished. The visible progress reinforces the habit of using body doubling sessions productively.

## When Body Doubling Doesn't Work

Not every situation benefits from body doubling:

**Confidential work.** If your screen contains sensitive information, a public body doubling environment isn't appropriate.

**Highly collaborative environments.** If the other person keeps talking to you, they're not a body double — they're an interruption source. Body doubling requires parallel work, not interaction.

**Specific sensory needs.** Some people with ADHD are hypersensitive to noise or movement. A busy coffee shop might create more distraction than focus. In that case, try virtual body doubling with the other person on mute, or a quiet library.

## Building a Body Doubling Practice

Start with one session per week. Pick the task you've been avoiding the most — the one that never seems to get done when you're working alone. Schedule a body doubling session specifically for that task, either in person or virtual.

If it works — and for most people with ADHD, it works dramatically well — increase the frequency. Two sessions per week. Then three. Many people find that body doubling sessions become their most productive hours, and they start building their week around them.

The fact that humans focus better in the presence of other humans isn't a weakness. It's how we evolved — working alongside others in shared spaces for millennia. Body doubling isn't a hack. It's returning to our default mode.
